Francesco Acerbi’s Departure from Italy National Squad
Francesco Acerbi has left the Italy national squad ahead of upcoming friendlies in the United States after allegations of racial abuse towards Napoli defender Juan Jesus.
Allegations and Denials
The Inter Milan defender has denied racially abusing Brazil international Jesus during Sunday’s 1-1 draw in Serie A.
FIGC Decision
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) stated that Acerbi has provided his version of events to Italy coach Luciano Spalletti and teammates. It was mutually agreed that Acerbi will not participate in the upcoming games against Venezuela and Ecuador.

FIGC Statement
A statement on the FIGC website explained that Acerbi clarified the alleged incident to head coach Luciano Spalletti upon his arrival at the national team camp in Rome.
- There was no defamatory, denigrating, or racist intent on Acerbi’s part.
- Acerbi will be excluded from the squad for the next two friendlies in the United States to allow for resolution.
Replacement in the Squad
Roma defender Gianluca Mancini, already on a reserved squad list, has been called up to replace Acerbi.
Inter Milan’s Response
An Inter statement acknowledged the FIGC’s decision and stated that the club will meet with Acerbi to clarify the details of the incident.
