Finnish Prime Minister Accuses Russia of Orchestrating Migrant Crisis
During a visit to the Russia-Finland border, Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo accused Russia of orchestrating a migrant crisis and called for assistance from the European Union. He made these allegations while speaking alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Situation at the Border
Orpo described the situation at the border, highlighting the use of illegal immigrants by Russia against Finland. He emphasized the need for common solutions to address this phenomenon and mentioned that Finland is preparing its own legislation while also seeking EU-level measures.
Border Closure and Security Concerns
Finland extended the closure of its borders with Russia due to the perceived high risk of organized migration. Currently, eight out of nine checkpoints with Russia have been shut down, with only one remaining open for rail travel.
European Union Support
Orpo expressed gratitude for the support received from the European Commission, the EU, and other member states in dealing with the migrant crisis. Ursula von der Leyen reaffirmed that the issue is not just about Finland’s security but also concerns the security of the entire European Union.
Allegations Against Russia
Orpo alleged that Russia was facilitating illegal entry into Finland via the land border, taking advantage of warmer weather conditions. The majority of these immigrants come from Africa and the Middle East, seeking asylum in the EU.
Geopolitical Impact
In April 2023, Finland’s decision to join NATO marked a significant shift from its long-standing neutrality. This move, along with Sweden’s earlier membership in the alliance, was viewed as a strategic setback for Russian President Vladimir Putin and a transformative moment in Europe’s post-Cold War security landscape.
