Families of Uvalde School Shooting Victims Sue Instagram and Call of Duty

Legal Action Against Meta, Activision, and Daniel Defense

Following the Uvalde school shooting, families of the victims filed lawsuits in California and Texas against social media giant Meta, video game maker Activision, and firearm manufacturer Daniel Defense.

Allegations Against Meta and Activision

  • Claims that Meta and Activision facilitated firearm manufacturers’ efforts to target children.
  • Accusations of promoting the AR-15 used in the shooting through their platforms.
  • Partnership to market weapons to underage boys.

Role of Daniel Defense

The families also sued Daniel Defense, the manufacturer of the AR-15 used in the shooting, alleging that the company played a part in promoting the weapon.

Attorney Josh Koskoff stated that the gunman purchased the rifle after being exposed to it through the game and social media, ultimately using it in the tragic incident.

Legal Proceedings

The lawsuits were filed shortly after a settlement with the city of Uvalde. One lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles against both Activision and Meta, while the second was filed against Daniel Defense in Uvalde District Court.

Accusations of Preying on Adolescents

The lawsuits claimed that Instagram, Activision, and Daniel Defense collaborated in targeting insecure adolescent boys, conditioning them to view firearms as solutions to their problems.

Attorneys alleged that the companies granted unrestricted access to children, leading to tragic consequences in cases like the Uvalde school shooting.

Response from Activision

Activision expressed condolences to the families affected by the incident but emphasized that video games are enjoyed by millions worldwide without inciting violence.
