Ex-NSA Employee Receives 21-Year Sentence in Russia Spy Case

Jareh Sebastian Dalke Sentenced to 21 Years in Prison

Jareh Sebastian Dalke, a 32-year-old former employee of the National Security Agency (NSA), has been sentenced to over 21 years in prison for attempting to spy for Russia. The Justice Department announced the sentencing on April 29.

Dalke’s Attempt to Sell Classified Information

While working at the NSA, Dalke obtained classified documents which he later tried to sell for $85,000 to an individual he believed was a Russian agent. However, he was unknowingly dealing with an undercover FBI agent.

Dalke’s Guilty Plea

In October, Dalke pleaded guilty in US District Court to six counts of attempting to transmit classified national defense information to a foreign government agent. Attorney General Merrick Garland highlighted the severity of Dalke’s actions, emphasizing the betrayal of trust.

Details of the Classified Information

The information Dalke sought to provide to Russia included a threat assessment of a third country’s military capabilities. Additionally, it contained sensitive details about US defense capabilities related to the same foreign nation.

Cooperation and Consequences

As part of the plea deal, Dalke is required to cooperate with authorities by providing truthful insights into his actions and their repercussions. Despite his previous role at the NSA, Dalke reapplied for a position after transferring classified information to an undercover agent.
