Erdogan Halts Turkey’s Trade with Israel Amid Gaza Conflict

Israeli Foreign Minister Accuses Turkey of Blocking Ports

Following recent reports, Foreign Minister Israel Katz has accused Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of breaking agreements by blocking ports for Israeli imports and exports. This move comes amidst the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip.

Turkey’s Actions

On Thursday, Turkey halted its exports and imports to and from Israel, as reported by Bloomberg News, citing Turkish officials. Turkish ports have started preventing the export of goods to Haifa and Ashdod ports, while goods arriving in Turkey from Israel are not being unloaded, according to reports from the Times of Israel citing the Globes financial daily.

Trade Impact

Both countries had a trade volume of $6.8 billion in the year 2023. In response to these actions, Minister Katz vowed to explore alternative trade options, focusing on local production and imports from other countries.

Erdogan’s Call for Palestinian Unity

After meeting with Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh in Istanbul, Turkish President Erdogan urged Palestinians to unite during the conflict in Gaza. The meeting, which took place at the Dolmabahce palace, lasted for over two and a half hours.

Unity for Victory

Erdogan emphasized the importance of Palestinian unity, stating that it is crucial for the strongest response to Israel and the path to victory. He also highlighted the need to maintain attention on Gaza amidst strained ties between Tel Aviv and Tehran.

Erdogan’s Criticism of Israeli Leadership

Erdogan previously criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israeli leadership for escalating tensions in the Middle East. He condemned Israel for violating international law and the Vienna Convention by targeting the Iranian Embassy in Damascus.
