Elon Musk Faces Inquiry Over Social Media Dispute in Brazil
On Sunday (Apr 7), a Brazilian judge opened an inquiry into Elon Musk over charges of obstruction of justice related to his social media company X, formerly Twitter.
Legal Battle Over Blocking Certain Accounts
Musk and X could face a fine of 100,000 reais ($19,740) per day if they fail to comply with a court order to block specific accounts. Justice Alexandre de Moraes has instructed X to refrain from disobeying any court order, including reactivating blocked profiles.
Musk’s Challenge and Allegations
Challenging the Supreme Court justice’s order, Musk accused the judge of betraying the constitution and people of Brazil. He called for Moraes’ resignation and criticized the demands placed on X as violating Brazilian law.
Constitutional Concerns and Legal Action
Musk has denounced the fines, threats, and restrictions imposed by the judge, stating that principles matter more than profit. He described the blocking order as draconian and encouraged the use of VPNs to access X in Brazil. Reuters reported Musk’s intention to legally challenge the order, emphasizing the importance of freedom of speech, due process, and transparency for the people of Brazil.
