Ecuador Sues Mexico at World Court Over Asylum Decision

Ecuador Takes Legal Action Against Mexico at ICJ

Ecuador has initiated legal proceedings against Mexico at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over the granting of asylum to former Ecuadorean Vice President Jorge Glas. The move comes after a series of events that have strained relations between the two countries.

The Background

  • Jorge Glas, convicted of corruption twice, faced new charges and sought asylum at Mexico’s embassy in Quito.
  • Ecuador accused Mexico of violating international law by granting asylum to Glas despite pending criminal charges.

The Legal Actions

Ecuador filed a lawsuit at the ICJ, alleging that Mexico’s actions constituted a breach of international law and interference in its internal affairs. Mexico, in response, filed its own lawsuit against Ecuador, citing violations of international law related to a raid on its mission.

The ICJ Proceedings

The ICJ will conduct emergency measures hearings in response to the legal actions. While Ecuador is set to defend its position at a hearing, the cases are expected to take time to be fully heard and resolved.

Ongoing Tensions

  • Ecuador’s lawsuit also references statements made by Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, which were deemed insulting.
  • Glas, despite an unlawful arrest, remains in prison due to previous convictions and faces charges related to misappropriation of funds.

As the legal battle unfolds at the ICJ, the situation between Ecuador and Mexico continues to be complex and contentious.
