Development of the Lightest Bulletproof Jacket

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in India has recently unveiled the lightest bulletproof jacket designed to protect against the highest threat level, known as threat level 6. This innovative jacket was developed by the Kanpur-based Defence Materials and Store Research and Development (DMSRDE).

Key Features of the Bulletproof Jacket

  • Designed to protect against 7.62 x 54 R API (Level 6 of BIS 17051) ammunition
  • Front Hard Armour Panel (HAP) can withstand multiple hits or up to six shots of 7.62 x 54 R API (Sniper rounds)
  • Areal density of ICW hard armour panel (HAP) and standalone HAP is less than 40 kg/m2 and 43 kg/m2 respectively
  • Made of monolithic ceramic plate and polymer backing for enhanced wearability and comfort

Testing and Approval

The bulletproof jacket underwent successful testing at the Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL) in Chandigarh. It is reported to be based on a new design approach that ensures superior protection and comfort during operations.

Applause from Officials

Secretary Department of Defence Research and Development and Chairman DRDO commended DMSRDE for the successful development of this groundbreaking bulletproof jacket. The jacket is a significant advancement in protective gear for military personnel.

Future Implementations

It was also mentioned that the Indian Air Force is looking to provide its helicopter crew with new bulletproof jackets that are lighter and more comfortable for flying in counter-terrorist environments and internal security duties. These jackets are designed to offer Level 3+ ballistic protection and meet specific weight requirements for different operational scenarios.
