Dragons’ Den Contestant Faces Unjust Humiliation

The Unimpressive Pitch on Dragons’ Den

While hopeful business owners may think they’ve got the best idea since sliced bread, impressing the moguls on Dragons’ Den can be near impossible. John Nicholls was one of the contestants in 2017 who believed he had a stellar idea to help dog owners clear up after their mucky pups.

John’s HandiScoop Pitch

John’s nerves and the intensity of the questioning meant his nerves got the better of him while pitching his HandiScoop in the den. The 65-year-old offered the stars of the BBC show a 15 per cent share in his company for £45,000.

The HandiScoop Device

The device is a long-handled dog poo scoop with a toothed head covered by a bag, meaning owners don’t have to use their hands to pick up after their pets. HandiScoop claims it can scoop up to four average-sized droppings per bag, making it more environmentally friendly.

The Dragons’ Reactions

Despite John’s efforts, the Dragons, especially Peter Jones, disagreed with his pitch. John felt humiliated by the unfair grilling and intense questioning. Peter’s aggressive response left John feeling intimidated and convinced that Peter was not someone he wanted to do business with.

The Outcome

John walked away empty-handed, with Moonpig founder Nick Jenkins also unimpressed by the idea. Even the show’s presenter noted the harsh treatment John received in the den. However, despite not impressing the Dragons, HandiScoop has achieved significant sales success since its inception in 2011.

HandiScoop’s Success

HandiScoop has made £1.47 million in sales since 2011, with retailer Pets At Home being one of its clients. The scoops are available in around 400 stores, with consistent orders from the dedicated client.
