Democratic Republic of Congo Appoints First Female Prime Minister
Democratic Republic of Congo’s President Felix Tshisekedi appointed the country’s first ever female prime minister, Judith Suminwa, on Monday. This historic appointment comes after weeks of uncertainty following Tshisekedi’s inauguration for a second term in January.
Challenges and Responsibilities
Suminwa expressed her awareness of the great responsibility that comes with her new role, stating on national television, “I am aware of the great responsibility … We will work for peace and the development of the country.”
The authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo are faced with numerous challenges, including a worsening conflict and humanitarian crisis in eastern regions, as well as the management of the country’s significant mineral wealth.
Past Promises and Criticisms
In his first term, President Tshisekedi pledged to address endemic corruption, rebuild the economy, tackle deep inequalities, and curb insecurity in the eastern regions. However, critics argue that he fell short on fulfilling these promises.
