Severe Weather Alert in India and Bangladesh
Recent reports from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) have highlighted severe weather conditions affecting parts of India and Bangladesh. Here are the key points to note:
Impact of Cyclonic Storm Remal
- Severe cyclonic storm Remal has caused significant damage in Bangladesh and India’s West Bengal state.
- 16 casualties have been reported due to the storm’s impact.
- The storm is now weakening into a deep depression.
Expected Heavy Rainfall
The IMD has forecasted heavy rainfall in the following regions:
- West Bengal
- Northeastern states including Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, and Tripura
The IMD has issued warnings about potential damage to structures and flooding in low-lying areas. It is advised for residents to take necessary precautions.

Residents in the affected areas are advised to:

- Avoid waterlogging-vulnerable areas
In West Bengal, light to heavy rainfall is expected, with isolated places experiencing very heavy rainfall.
Red Alert in Meghalaya and Assam
Meghalaya, Assam, and neighboring areas are under a ‘red’ alert due to the forecast of very heavy rainfall on May 28 and 29.
Monsoon Advancement
IMD’s director general, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, mentioned that the cyclone has contributed to the advancement of the monsoon over the Bay of Bengal. Favorable conditions are developing for the southwest monsoon’s progression over Kerala in the coming days.
