Port Lockroy has a rich history, serving as a secure harbor for whaling fleets in the early 20th century. It became the site of the first continuously inhabited British base in Antarctica, known as Base A, established in 1944. Despite its closure in 1962, the base was preserved as a Historic Site and Monument under the Antarctic Treaty.
In 1996, Port Lockroy was transformed into a “living museum,” welcoming visitors during the Antarctic summer months. The UK Antarctic Heritage Trust took over operations in 2006, ensuring the preservation of this historic site.
