Recent Discovery of Cocaine Bricks in Sydney Beaches
Beachgoers in Sydney recently stumbled upon five “bricks” of cocaine worth nearly AU$1 million washed up on the shores of Freshwater and Curl Curl beaches.
Discovery Details
- The packets were found on Monday morning, weighing a total of five kilograms.
- The estimated street value of the drugs is AU$900,000.
- Two packages were discovered at Freshwater Beach, while three more were found at Curl Curl Beach.
Ongoing Investigations
Since the initial discovery in December, over 250 kilograms of cocaine packages have been found along the coast of New South Wales.
The New South Wales police have urged the public to report any suspicious packages to the authorities as investigations continue.
Previous Discoveries
Several similar packages have been found sporadically since December, with discoveries in Central Coast, Western Australia, Victoria, and various beaches in NSW.
Authorities believe the cocaine consignments may have arrived on cargo ships from South America and were thrown into the ocean to be picked up elsewhere.
Law Enforcement Efforts
Analysis of the packages revealed that they had been in the water for no more than six weeks before being discovered.
Australians reportedly consume the most cocaine per capita globally, according to a study by the OECD.
