Impact of Heatwave in Manila
Exceptionally hot weather has led temperatures in the capital city of Manila to hit record highs recently, resulting in the suspension of in-person classes in schools across the country.
Manila Zoo’s Response
Amid a scorching heatwave in the Philippines, Manila Zoo is taking measures to ensure the well-being of its animals, especially the tigers and lions.
- The zoo is providing tigers with frozen treats made from animal blood, known as “bloodsicles,” to help them cool down.
- Lion mating is restricted during the hottest hours of the day to prevent heat-related issues.
- Water is continuously splashed on the walls and ground of the enclosures to reduce temperatures.
- Tigers and lions receive regular sprays of water and have access to pools within their enclosures to cool off.
El Niño Weather Phenomenon
The intense heat and extreme weather conditions in the region are attributed to the El Niño weather pattern.
- During the high-temperature months of March, April, and May, the heat index reached dangerous levels.
- State meteorologists anticipate even higher temperatures in the coming days.
School Closures
As a result of the heatwave, nearly 6,700 schools in the Philippines suspended in-person classes on a specific day due to the extreme temperatures.
