Chaos in Norfolk village as feral chickens take over

Snettisham Feral Chickens: A Growing Nuisance

Around 100 feral chickens have become a major nuisance for residents of Snettisham, Norfolk, causing significant disruptions to daily life. These chickens, descendants of dinosaurs, have become a big problem in this English village.

The Chicken Invasion

Locals report that the chickens, which have swarmed in from a nearby wood, are wreaking havoc by destroying gardens and disturbing the peace with their constant clucking, especially at night.

Residents’ Plight

Residents describe their lives as being made “hell” by the presence of these feral chickens. The ownership of the land where the chickens reside remains unclear, but villagers have noticed a recent surge in the bird population.

Unintended Consequences

Not only are the chickens causing trouble on their own, but they are also attracting visitors who inadvertently lure rats by leaving food for the birds. This has led to tensions between residents and visitors in the village.

Community Frustrations

Residents like Rod Mackenzie express frustration over the situation, citing the chickens’ destructive behavior and the rat infestation they bring. The issue has escalated to the point where some residents are resorting to extreme measures like wearing earplugs to block out the noise.

Parish Council Response

The Snettisham parish council has acknowledged the problem, highlighting the health hazard posed by the rodent infestation caused by feeding the chickens. Efforts are being made to address the issue and find a sustainable solution.

Varied Perspectives

While some residents are fed up with the chickens, others like Graeme McQuade see them as adding character to the village. A dog walker, who prefers to remain anonymous, believes that there are more pressing matters in the world than a few chickens and urges people to focus on more important issues.
