British Foreign Minister Imposes Sanctions on Extremist Groups in Israel
British foreign minister David Cameron has taken a strong stance against extremist settlers in Israel, citing their actions as a threat to security and peace in the region.
Sanctions Imposed
On Friday, Britain announced sanctions targeting two “extremist” groups and four individuals in Israel allegedly responsible for inciting violence in the West Bank. The Foreign Office identified Hilltop Youth and Lehava as groups known for supporting and promoting violence against Palestinian communities.
Individuals Sanctioned
The statement issued by the Foreign Office named four individuals who have been involved in human rights abuses against Palestinian communities. Notable among them are Noam Federman, who trained settler groups in violent tactics, and Elisha Yered, who justified violence against Palestinians on religious grounds.
Escalating Violence
The situation in the West Bank has been tense, with a rise in violence even before Israel’s recent assault on Gaza. Following an attack by Hamas on southern Israel, the region has witnessed increased military raids by Israel, settler violence, and street attacks by Palestinians.
Call for Action
Minister David Cameron emphasized the need for Israeli authorities to address the issue promptly. He warned of further actions, including additional sanctions, if necessary. Those sanctioned will face financial and travel restrictions, with the UK having previously imposed sanctions on four Israeli nationals earlier this year.
