Deadly Flooding and Mudslides in Southern Brazil
Recent flooding, mudslides, and torrential storms in southern Brazil have resulted in the displacement of 69,200 individuals from their homes, according to the country’s civil defence agency. Porto Alegre, a city of 1.4 million, has been identified as one of the worst-affected regions.
Impact on Porto Alegre
Raging floodwaters have led to 57 fatalities, 74 injuries, and 67 individuals reported missing in Porto Alegre. The Guaiba River, flowing through the city, has reached a historic high of 5.04 meters, surpassing the previous record set during the 1941 floods.
Lack of Access to Potable Water
Over a million people in the affected areas are facing a shortage of potable water due to the flooding. Authorities are working to evacuate flooded neighborhoods and provide assistance to residents navigating chaotic conditions.
Infrastructure Disruptions
The international airport in Porto Alegre has suspended all flights indefinitely, adding to the logistical challenges faced in the region. Governor Eduardo Leite of Rio Grande do Sul has called for a significant investment plan akin to a “Marshall Plan” to aid in the reconstruction efforts.
Presidential Response
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva visited Rio Grande do Sul to assess the situation and pledged ongoing support from the government. President Lula emphasized the importance of collaboration between federal, state, and local authorities in providing assistance to the affected areas.
