Boeing’s 787 Production Plans Altered by Supplier Shortages

Boeing Faces Challenges in 787 Production

Boeing, the US plane maker, is encountering obstacles in ramping up the production and delivery of its 787 widebody jets due to shortages of crucial parts from suppliers. Scott Stocker, the vice president and general manager of the 787 program, has highlighted the company’s intention to gradually increase production to meet strong demand while acknowledging challenges in sourcing specific components.

Internal Memo Reveals Supply Chain Concerns

An internal memo obtained by Reuters, addressed to workers at Boeing’s South Carolina facility, emphasized the company’s commitment to managing supply chain disruptions and ensuring customers of its dedication to fulfilling orders. Despite these setbacks, Boeing remains determined to navigate the production hurdles to satisfy market demand.

FAA Oversight and Safety Standards

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is closely monitoring Boeing’s challenges with certain parts to ensure the safety and compliance of all Boeing 787 aircraft. The FAA reiterated its authority in issuing airworthiness certificates for every 787 produced, indicating stringent oversight to uphold safety standards.

Quality Control Concerns and Manufacturing Practices

Recent revelations by Boeing engineer Sam Salehpour, who testified at a US Senate hearing, have raised concerns about possible shortcomings in the manufacturing process, particularly regarding the adequacy of shimming in the 787 Dreamliner. While Boeing has refuted claims of widespread fatigue issues on older 787 aircraft, these allegations have intensified scrutiny over the company’s quality control measures.

Challenges Across Boeing’s Production Lines

The scrutiny extends beyond the 787 program to Boeing’s production of the 737 MAX, which is facing its own set of challenges. Factory checks and operational slowdowns in Washington state have contributed to a decline in 737 MAX output, as regulatory scrutiny intensifies following safety incidents.

Boeing’s Commitment to Safety and Reliability

Despite these challenges, Boeing is striving to address supply chain disruptions and enhance manufacturing processes to uphold its reputation for safety and reliability in the aviation industry.
