Biden authorizes Ukraine for limited strikes in Russia with US weapons

Ukraine Allowed to Target Areas Near Kharkiv with US Weapons

Recent developments have seen Kyiv being permitted to target areas just over the border near Kharkiv, following significant Russian advances around this northeastern city. President Joe Biden has given a nod to Ukraine to use American weapons to strike targets within Russian territory, albeit with restrictions.

US Approval for Counterfire in Kharkiv

According to two US officials who spoke with CNN, Kyiv is allowed to target areas near Kharkiv to hit back at Russian forces. The president’s directive allows Ukraine to use US-supplied weapons for counterfire purposes in response to Russian aggression.

Change in Policy Amid International Pressure

The easing of restrictions marks a departure from long-standing policy and comes amidst increasing international pressure from close US allies. However, the approval is limited to the Kharkiv area, with no request for permission beyond that.

Targeting Russian Forces and Infrastructure

Russian forces, ammunitions depots, and logistical hubs can now be targeted with US-provided artillery and rockets across the border from Kharkiv in western Russia. Notably, Ukraine is barred from using its most powerful munitions, such as the long-range ATACMS missiles, to strike Russia.

Support from France and Germany

France and Germany have expressed support for Ukraine’s use of western weapons against targets inside Russia. French President Emmanuel Macron stated that French weapons supplied to Ukraine, including long-range missiles, are permitted to strike targets within Russia.

Call for Expanded Weapon Usage

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly sought permission from allies to expand the usage of provided weapons to strike inside Russia. The issue remains controversial, with concerns from Western leaders about potential escalation and wider conflict involving NATO.
