Biden and Netanyahu Discuss Latest Gaza Developments and Humanitarian Aid

US President Biden Discusses Gaza Situation with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu

Tensions have escalated recently between the United States and Israel, particularly in light of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s call for new elections in Israel, citing Prime Minister Netanyahu as an obstacle to peace. President Biden later expressed support for Schumer’s remarks.

White House Talks with Israeli Prime Minister

The White House confirmed that President Joe Biden had a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday, focusing on the situation in Rafah. This marked the first call between the two leaders since February 15, with discussions revolving around increasing humanitarian aid to Gaza.

International Concerns

The discussions between Biden and Netanyahu occur amidst mounting tensions in the West Asian region. While the US has historically supported Israel’s right to self-defense, recent criticism has emerged regarding Netanyahu’s handling of the conflict.

The White House statement highlighted the focus on the latest developments in Israel and Gaza, including efforts to provide essential aid to Gaza amidst the ongoing crisis.

Israeli Prime Minister’s Commitment

Netanyahu reiterated Israel’s objectives in the conflict, emphasizing the elimination of Hamas, the release of hostages, and ensuring Gaza no longer poses a threat to Israel. He also stressed the importance of humanitarian aid in achieving these goals.

International Calls for Ceasefire

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called for an urgent ceasefire, expressing concerns about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. She emphasized the need to prevent famine in the region and urged swift action to facilitate humanitarian aid delivery.

Von der Leyen praised Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi for his efforts in brokering previous ceasefires and stressed the importance of avoiding a full-scale offensive in Rafah to protect civilians.

President al-Sisi affirmed Egypt’s stance against an Israeli military operation in Rafah, underscoring the need to prioritize civilian safety.
