Israel-Hamas Conflict: ICC Prosecutor Seeks Arrest Warrants
Earlier on Monday, ICC chief prosecutor Karim Khan sought arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, and three Hamas leaders – Yahya Sinwar, Mohammed Diab Ibrahim al-Masri (Deif), and Ismail Haniyeh – on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
US President Joe Biden’s Response
United States President Joe Biden criticized the ICC prosecutor’s application for arrest warrants against Israeli leaders amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. Biden emphasized that there is no equivalence between Israel and Hamas, stating that the application is outrageous. He reiterated the US’s unwavering support for Israel’s security.
Netanyahu’s Rejection of ICC Prosecutor’s Decision
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the ICC prosecutor’s decision, rejecting the comparison between Israel and Hamas. He described the move as absurd and a form of antisemitism. Netanyahu vowed that attempts to restrict Israel’s actions would not succeed.
Impact on Hostage Deal and Ceasefire Agreement
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken also criticized the ICC’s bid and rejected the equivalence drawn between Israel and Hamas. Blinken expressed concerns that the ICC’s decision could hinder efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement and impact humanitarian assistance in the region.
According to reports, Israel was willing to cooperate with the ICC, but the handling of the situation has raised questions about the legitimacy of the investigation.
