Anya Taylor-Joy: Embracing Feminine Rage
The Queen’s Gambit star Anya Taylor-Joy recently shared her thoughts on embracing feminine rage and empowerment. In a candid interview with British GQ, the 28-year-old actress revealed how her latest role in the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa tapped into a new level of anger within her.
Challenging School Days
Taylor-Joy, who spent her school days in the UK after being born in the US, recalled feeling out of place and misunderstood during her formative years. She described how the messaging she received at school made her feel like everything about her was wrong, leading her to seek solace in Hyde Park during summer holidays where she found refuge in reading and climbing trees.
Reflecting on her experiences, Taylor-Joy expressed, “If I loved something, I loved something. I have no chill in any regard, and that can be frightening for people, I guess.” She highlighted the importance of standing one’s ground as long as it doesn’t harm others.
Embracing Feminine Rage
Discussing her evolving perspective on feminine rage, Taylor-Joy emphasized the significance of women being seen as individuals with complex emotions and reactions. She clarified that her advocacy for feminine rage does not promote violence but rather aims to empower women to express themselves authentically.
Regarding her role in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, where she portrays the titular character, Taylor-Joy shared how the experience allowed her to tap into a newfound sense of assertiveness. She revealed, “For all my championing of female rage, I’ve never been an angry person. I’ve always internalized this idea that I am the problem when faced with mistreatment.”
A Newfound Empowerment
Taylor-Joy expressed gratitude for her character in Furiosa, as it enabled her to embrace her anger and advocate for herself. She recounted a moment where her husband noticed a change in her demeanor, remarking, “I’m glad that I’m angry! If someone steps on me now, I’m like, ‘Hey, f*** you!’ That makes me feel good.”
Additionally, the actress recently revealed her secret marriage to partner Malcolm McRae, further embracing personal empowerment and celebrating her journey towards self-acceptance.
The Heroes Issue of British GQ featuring Anya Taylor-Joy is set to release digitally and in print on June 11th.
