Uncovering Cases of Incest Through DNA Testing
Recent widespread DNA testing has revealed numerous cases of infants born to close biological relatives, shedding light on a troubling trend of incest in society.
Prevalence of Incest
While ancestry is typically determined by DNA testing, recent studies in the US have shown a much higher prevalence of incest than previously realized. A research published in a psychiatry textbook in 1975 estimated the rate of children born of incest at one in a million. However, current research suggests that the number has increased to one in 7,000.
A Shocking Discovery
In a shocking case reported by CNN, Victoria Hill, a 39-year-old woman, discovered through a DNA test that her ex-boyfriend from high school was, in fact, her biological brother. This revelation came to light at a high school reunion where both decided to explore their ancestry through genetic testing.
The man, also surprised by the test results showing their familial connection, confirmed the shocking truth that they were siblings. This discovery caused immense trauma to Hill, who expressed her concerns about the possibility of unknowingly interacting with more siblings.
Accidental Incest and Fertility Fraud
CNN highlighted Hill’s case to bring attention to accidental incest cases that have proliferated due to a lack of regulations, especially in situations involving sperm donations for female fertility treatments. The incident of Dr. Donald Cline, who fathered at least ninety children in Indiana, further emphasized the issue of fertility fraud in such cases.
It is important to note that babies born as a result of incest are at an increased risk of birth defects and genetic disorders, highlighting the serious consequences of such familial relationships.
