Scottie Scheffler was arrested on his way to the US PGA Championship at Valhalla on Friday morning in what he described as “a big misunderstanding” during “a very chaotic situation.”

Arrest Details

Scheffler was arrested by Louisville Metro Police while trying to drive into the golf club in heavy traffic caused by an earlier incident where a pedestrian died after being struck by a shuttle bus. The world number one now faces charges of second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic.

Statement from Scottie Scheffler

Prior to Round 2 of the PGA Championship, Scheffler issued a statement expressing his perspective on the events. He mentioned that he was following police directions in a chaotic situation and there was a misunderstanding of what he was being asked to do. Scheffler emphasized that he never intended to disregard any instructions and hoped to focus on golf moving forward.

Delay in Tee Times

The second round tee times were delayed by 80 minutes due to the fatal incident, with tournament officials confirming that the deceased individual was a worker with one of the on-site vendors.

Eye-Witness Account

ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington, who witnessed the incident, described the sequence of events where Scheffler was instructed by a police officer to stop, leading to a physical altercation that resulted in Scheffler’s arrest.

Police Report Details

According to the police report, Detective Gillis attempted to give instructions to Scheffler, who refused to comply and accelerated forward, causing Detective Gillis to suffer injuries. The report also mentioned damage to Detective Gillis’ uniform during the incident.

The Louisville Metro Police Department released a statement regarding the traffic incident, outlining the preliminary findings of the investigation into the fatal collision involving a pedestrian and a shuttle bus.
