Higgins and McDonald Support Palestinian Women’s Team in Dublin

President Michael D Higgins and Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald Attend Football Match

President Michael D Higgins and Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald recently attended a historic football match featuring the Palestinian women’s team in Dublin. The fixture took place at Dalymount Park and marked the Palestinian side’s first match in Europe.

Act of Solidarity and Fundraising Efforts

Bohemians FC, the host team, extended an invitation to the Palestinian team as an act of solidarity with the Palestinian people. The match also aimed to raise funds for humanitarian efforts in the region.

Community Support and Attendance

Thousands of supporters gathered at Dalymount Park to witness this significant event, with tickets being sold out days in advance. A Palestinian flag was placed on every seat in the ground, emphasizing the spirit of unity and support.

Symbolic Gestures and Tribute

Prior to kick-off, a touching tribute was made as a mural of Hind Rajab, a young Palestinian girl tragically killed in Gaza, was unveiled outside the stadium. This poignant gesture honored her memory and highlighted the importance of solidarity.

Supporting the Cause

For those unable to attend the match, alternative ways of showing support were encouraged. Fans were given the option to purchase a streaming pass, a non-attendance ticket, or make donations online. All proceeds from these initiatives will contribute to Palestinian humanitarian causes, including Palestine Sport for Life and Medical Aid for Palestinians.

Official Receptions

Prior to the match, a delegation from the Palestinian team was warmly received at Áras an Uachtaráin by President Higgins and at the Mansion House by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Daithí de Róiste. These official receptions underscored the significance of the event and the importance of fostering international solidarity.
