India Establishes Highest Tank Repair Facility to Counter China in Himalayas

Indian Army Enhances Border Infrastructure Along LAC

Expansion of Border Infrastructure

The Indian Army has been expanding border infrastructure along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China to house various tanks and combat vehicles, including the T-90, T-72, BMPs, and the K-9Vajra self-propelled Howitzers.

Establishment of Repair Facilities

Amid the ongoing bilateral friction with China along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the Indian Army has established two of the world’s highest tank repair facilities to support its operations. Over 500 tanks and infantry combat vehicles have been deployed in Eastern Ladakh.

Armoured Vehicle Maintenance Facilities

The Indian Armed forces have set up two armoured vehicle maintenance and repair facilities near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China in Nyoma and Daulat Beg Oldi (DBO) sectors. These sectors, located as high as 14,500 feet above sea level, serve as the highest battlefield for tanks and infantry combat vehicles along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh.

Deployment of Combat Vehicles

A significant number of tanks, BMP combat vehicles, and Indian-made armoured vehicles like the Quick Reaction Fighting Vehicles have been deployed in Eastern Ladakh following the standoff between India and China that began in April-May 2020.

Maintenance Facilities Visit

On May 11, Army Chief General Manoj Pande visited the Medium Maintenance (Reset) Facility for Armoured Fighting Vehicles (AFVs) in Ladakh to inspect the unique maintenance facility aimed at promoting enhanced serviceability and mission reliability of AFVs.

Operational Readiness in Challenging Terrain

The facilities have been constructed to ensure the combat fleet remains operationally ready in the rugged Himalayan terrain and challenging weather conditions, with temperatures dropping as low as minus 40 degrees.

Current Standoff Situation

India and China have been engaged in a standoff in the eastern Ladakh region for the past four years, with around 50,000 troops deployed by each side near the Line of Actual Control.
