The Power of a Free Mental Health Phoneline: A Personal Story
A woman named Nicola Clare from Dublin recently shared her experience with a mental health phoneline that played a crucial role in helping her through dark times. In 2009, Nicola reached out to the Samaritans when she was facing deep despair after suffering a prolapse disc and having to put her life on hold.
A Lifeline in Times of Crisis
Nicola described how her mood began to plummet, leading to self-harm and suicidal thoughts. Feeling out of control and losing her sense of self, she found it difficult to articulate her thoughts out loud. However, the response she received from the Samaritans via email was warm and accepting, providing her with a sense of relief and support.
During one particularly dark night when her mind was racing, Nicola decided to call the Samaritans helpline. The voice on the other end offered her humanity and comfort, pulling her back from the edge of despair.
The Impact of the Freephone Service
Since its inception, the freephone mental health helpline has received over five million calls, highlighting the significant impact it has had on individuals in need. Thanks to the support of six telecoms providers covering the cost of calls, the partnership with the helpline has been extended for another five years.
Barry, a dedicated Samaritans volunteer for 35 years, emphasized the importance of listening to others without immediately offering advice. By simply being present and attentive, individuals can feel more understood and supported in times of distress.
Barry encouraged everyone to practice active listening in their interactions, noting that this simple act can make a profound difference in how others feel heard and valued.
