Cannes Palais Temporarily Shut Down Due to Bomb Scare

Bomb Scare Temporarily Shuts Down Cannes Film Festival Entrance

During the 77th Cannes Film Festival, the Palais entrance faced a temporary shutdown due to a bomb scare. Festival staff discovered a suspicious item on a Saturday afternoon, leading to the closure of the street outside the Palais. Police officers restricted pedestrian access in both directions while inspecting an unclaimed rucksack in the middle of the crosswalk.

Security Measures and Festival Highlights

  • The Palais and its immediate surroundings were not evacuated but were under tight security measures.
  • Public access was restricted, and queuing directly in front of the building was not allowed.
  • Attendees already in line were permitted to stay near a police post.
  • The press terrace facing the Croisette was also closed temporarily.
  • After confirming the area’s safety, the street and Palais entrance reopened at 3:10pm.
  • Enhanced security at Cannes included a new detector gate causing delays in venue entry.

A-list celebrities like Emma Stone, Barry Keoghan, and Anya Taylor-Joy graced the festival with their presence. Stone reunited with Joe Alwyn for the premiere of “Kinds Of Kindness,” directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. The event also marked a reunion for the cast of Lanthimos’ “Poor Things,” a critically acclaimed film.

Irish actor Barry Keoghan presented his new film “Bird,” sharing insights into the working-class themes portrayed in the movie. Keoghan’s personal background added depth to his portrayal of a single father in the film.

Festival Highlights and Recognitions

  • Francis Ford Coppola received a standing ovation after the premiere of his sci-fi film “Megalopolis.”
  • Meryl Streep was honored with the prestigious Palme d’Or award for her contributions to cinema.

Throughout the festival, there were notable moments of appreciation, including standing ovations for filmmakers and actors. The event showcased a diverse range of films and talents, creating a vibrant atmosphere in Cannes.
