Pro-Palestinian Protests in Ghent
The pro-Palestinian protesters in Ghent have been demonstrating against Israel’s military offensive in Gaza and have been occupying parts of the University of Ghent since early this month.
University of Ghent Ends Partnerships
Belgium’s University of Ghent (UGent) is terminating its partnerships with three Israeli educational or research institutions. Rector Rik Van de Walle stated that these affiliations no longer align with UGent’s human rights policy.
- UGent cuts ties with Holon Institute of Technology, MIGAL Galilee Research Institute, and the Volcani Center.
- Partnerships were deemed problematic according to UGent’s human rights test.
- Collaboration with the Holon Institute was criticized for providing material support to the army for actions in Gaza.
A spokesperson for the university mentioned that the decision would impact four projects. The three Israeli institutions did not provide immediate comments.
Protesters’ Response
The protesters welcomed the decision but see it as just a first step. They have vowed to continue occupying parts of the university until all ties with Israeli institutions are severed.
Pro-Palestinian Protest at University Irvine
At the University of California, Irvine, police regained control of a lecture hall from pro-Palestinian protesters who had occupied the building. The demonstration was part of a nationwide wave of campus protests against the Gaza conflict.
- The protest was labeled as “violent” by the university.
- University Chancellor Howard Gillman stated that the university is in discussions with protesting students but has not reached an agreement on finding a non-disruptive alternative site.
- The university has made it clear that it will not divest from Israel.
