Antiques Roadshow Expert Declines Valuation for Controversial Item
During a recent episode of Antiques Roadshow, viewers were surprised when an expert refused to put a price on a controversial item brought in by a guest. The episode, hosted by Fiona Bruce, took place at Alexandra Gardens in Cardiff.
Item with a Dark History
The guest presented an item with a history tied to the transatlantic slave trade. The item, a disc that endorsed the professional reputation of an African slave trader in the 18th century, left expert Ronnie Archer-Morgan speechless.
A Difficult Discussion
Despite the item’s troubling past, Ronnie acknowledged the importance of discussing it. He described the item as “amazing” while highlighting its connection to the inhumane trade practices of past centuries.
The guest shared how she acquired the object at a house sale 36 years ago, unaware of its significance at the time. Upon closer inspection, Ronnie identified the name inscribed on the item as Prince Jemmy of Grandy, a figure involved in the despicable trade of human beings.
Valuation Refusal
When it came to valuing the item, Ronnie made a poignant statement. He expressed his reluctance to assign a monetary value to something representing such a dark chapter in history. Instead, he emphasized the value of the lessons that can be learned from researching and discussing such artifacts.
Antiques Roadshow continues to uncover fascinating stories and objects, shedding light on both the beauty and darker aspects of history.
