Germany’s Olaf Scholz Urges Quick Temporary Ceasefire in Israel-Hamas Conflict

European Leaders Call for Ceasefire in Gaza

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz have both made urgent calls for a ceasefire in Gaza as the humanitarian crisis worsens in the region.

German Chancellor’s Plea for Ceasefire

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized the need for a temporary ceasefire during his visit to Israel. He discussed the importance of providing comprehensive humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza in a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Scholz stressed the necessity of a lasting ceasefire agreement and expressed concerns about civilian casualties and the lack of sufficient aid reaching Gaza.

European Commission President’s Concern

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen echoed these sentiments, highlighting the critical situation in Gaza. She emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire to address the looming famine in the region. Von der Leyen commended Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi for his efforts in brokering previous ceasefires and expressed concerns about the potential impact of a military operation in Rafah on civilians.

Both leaders emphasized the importance of reaching a swift agreement on a ceasefire to allow for the safe delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza and to prevent further escalation of the crisis.
