Caravaggio Masterpieces Reunion at Ulster Museum
Two masterpieces by the renowned painter Caravaggio are set for a rare reunion at the Ulster Museum in Belfast. The Supper at Emmaus and The Taking of Christ, painted in 1601 and 1602 respectively by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, have rarely been seen together since the first quarter of the 17th century.
National Treasures Project
The reunion of these iconic paintings is made possible by the National Treasures project. The Supper at Emmaus will be loaned to the Ulster Museum, while The Taking of Christ will be loaned by the Jesuit Community in Dublin with the support of the National Gallery of Ireland.
Significance of the Reunion
Anne Stewart, senior curator of art at National Museums NI, highlighted the profound meaning of announcing the exhibition in the lead-up to Easter. She emphasized the remarkable connection between the two Caravaggio paintings, both originally painted for the same patron and displayed in the same family palace in Rome.
- The Taking of Christ portrays the arrest of Christ after Judas identifies him with a kiss.
- The Supper at Emmaus captures the initial recognition of Christ by two disciples following the crucifixion and resurrection.
Excitement and Gratitude
Alexandra Kavanagh, head of national touring at the National Gallery, expressed excitement about the exhibition providing a fresh perspective on the much-loved paintings. Dr. Caroline Campbell, director of the National Gallery of Ireland, described The Taking of Christ as one of the most popular works at the gallery and eagerly anticipated its display at the Ulster Museum.
Unique Opportunity
Kathryn Thomson, chief executive of National Museums NI, emphasized the significance of bringing together these masterpieces in one location, creating a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for local audiences and visitors alike. The exhibition is a testament to strong partnerships and celebrates shared history and cultural diversity.
