Spanish Prosecutors Seek Prison Sentence for Former FA Chief Over ‘Kissgate’ Scandal
Spanish prosecutors have announced they are seeking a two-and-a-half year prison sentence for the country’s former FA chief Luis Rubiales over the infamous ‘Kissgate’ scandal. They are also seeking for him to pay compensation of €100,000 to footballer Jenni Hermoso if he is convicted at trial.
Pre-Trial Demands
Prosecutors laid out their pre-trial demands in a six-page indictment made public on Wednesday. They are seeking a one-year jail term for a sexual assault charge and a separate one-year six-month prison sentence for coercion linked to his alleged attempts to get Jenni to speak out in his defense over the ‘unwanted’ kiss he gave the Women’s World Cup winner last summer.
Legal Proceedings
Madrid-based judge Francisco de Jorge paved the way for Rubiales to be tried earlier this year after recommending he be put in the dock. The judge stated that his investigation had uncovered “solid evidence” pointing to the potential illegality of the kiss.
Accusations and Allegations
Jennifer Hermoso accused Luis Rubiales of a sexual assault, claiming that the kiss was not consensual. Rubiales, on the other hand, has insisted that it was consensual and described it as a peck.
Charges Against Others
The judge also proposed that former Spain’s World Cup women’s team manager Jorge Vilda, men’s team director Albert Luque, and former Spanish FA marketing director Ruben Rivera should face trial for their roles in the incident.
Legal Actions and Responses
Rubiales has faced legal actions and public scrutiny following the ‘Kissgate’ scandal. He has promised to defend his innocence and has expressed faith in the truth and the future.
Family Involvement
Rubiales’ mother, Angeles Bejar, went on a hunger strike to support her son and seek the truth about the incident. She expressed her concerns and hopes for a resolution to the situation.
Current Status
Rubiales is currently in the Dominican Republic but has promised to return to Spain shortly. He is also under a separate corruption probe related to a multi-million euro deal to relocate the Spanish Super Cup to Saudi Arabia.
