India expressed deep concern over the heartbreaking loss of civilian lives in the displacement camp in Rafah amidst the deteriorating situation in the Gaza Strip due to the ongoing war. The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, emphasized the need for protecting the civilian population and upholding international humanitarian law during the conflict.
Israel’s Incursion into Rafah
Israel initiated its incursion into Rafah in early May, disregarding global apprehensions regarding the safety of Palestinian residents in the area. The reported aggression escalated following Israel’s seizure of a strategic corridor on the Palestinian territory’s border with Egypt.
India’s Stance on the Conflict
India stands for the establishment of a sovereign, viable, and independent state of Palestine within recognized and mutually agreed borders. Being an early supporter of the state of Palestine and advocating for a two-state solution, India reaffirms its commitment to a peaceful resolution of the conflict.
Israeli Airstrike on Rafah
Gaza medics reported that Israeli forces conducted a dawn airstrike on Rafah, resulting in the deaths of at least 12 Palestinians. The airstrike targeted civilians attempting to retrieve the body of a civilian in the center of Rafah, with medics confirming that all casualties were civilians. Additionally, another Palestinian civilian lost their life in an airstrike on Al-Shati refugee camp west of Gaza City.
