Israel’s Rafah Invasion Unlikely to Stop Despite ICJ Ruling as Netanyahu Chooses Silence

Israel Ordered to Halt Military Offensive in Rafah

Israel was ordered by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to immediately stop the ongoing military offensive in Rafah, located in southern Gaza. The ICJ’s decision did not call for a complete ceasefire, but it put pressure on Israel to comply.

Israel’s Response to the ICJ Order

Despite the ICJ’s order, Israel War Cabinet member Benny Gantz indicated that the country is unlikely to change its course in the Rafah invasion. Gantz emphasized that Israel will continue its campaign in accordance with international law while aiming to protect the civilian population.

Israeli Government’s Stance

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government denied accusations of carrying out a genocide in Gaza, labeling them as false and morally repugnant. The government asserted that Israel will not conduct military actions that could endanger the Palestinian civilian population in Rafah.

International Response

The ICJ, lacking enforcement capabilities, called on Israel to reopen the Rafah border crossing. The United States and Egypt agreed to facilitate the flow of UN-provided humanitarian aid into Gaza through the Kerem Shalom crossing, showing a commitment to saving lives in the region.

US President’s Appreciation

US President Joe Biden commended Egypt for allowing humanitarian assistance to reach Gaza through the Kerem Shalom crossing, emphasizing the importance of such aid in the conflict-affected area.
