Lloyd Austin to Undergo Non-Surgical Procedure for Bladder Issue; Deputy Hicks to Assume Duties

US Secretary of Defence Undergoes Procedure

US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin is set to undergo a “scheduled, elective, and minimally invasive follow-up non-surgical procedure” on Saturday, May 25, at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Deputy Kathleen Hicks will temporarily assume his duties during this time.

Deputy Secretary Assumes Duties

Deputy Secretary of Defence Kathleen Hicks will serve as Acting Secretary of Defence while Lloyd Austin undergoes the medical procedure. The Pentagon stated, “The Secretary has determined he will be temporarily unable to perform his functions and duties during the procedure, so Deputy Secretary of Defence Kathleen Hicks will assume the functions and duties of the Secretary of Defence and serve as the Acting Secretary of Defence.”

Medical History

Austin, aged 70, had previously faced health challenges. He was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at Walter Reed National Military Medical Centre on New Year’s Day due to complications from a planned medical procedure. This followed minor surgery on December 22 last year after the detection of prostate cancer during routine screening.

In February, Austin was hospitalized in Washington, DC, due to an “emergent bladder issue.” This issue is unrelated to his cancer diagnosis and has no impact on his cancer prognosis.

Controversy and Criticism

Austin faced criticism and political controversy for not disclosing his surgery and subsequent hospitalizations promptly. Critics called for his resignation, alleging that he violated protocol by not informing the White House and other superiors about his medical absences in advance.

Standard protocol requires high-ranking government officials like Austin to notify the public of planned medical absences and designate individuals to assume responsibilities in their absence.

Despite the challenges, Austin remains committed to his role as Secretary of Defence, with Deputy Kathleen Hicks stepping in during his temporary absence.
