Israel halts Gaza live feed by seizing AP news agency’s equipment for ‘security threat’

Israeli Officials Confiscate AP Equipment

Israeli officials confiscated a camera and broadcasting equipment of news agency The Associated Press (AP) citing a new media law. The country’s Communication Ministry stated it will take action to restrict broadcasters from harming national interests.

Reason for Seizure

Israel accused the AP of providing images and videos from Gaza to Qatar-based news channel Al Jazeera. The seizure of the equipment led to the collapse of AP’s live feed from Gaza.

AP Condemns Israel’s Decision

AP condemned Israel’s decision and urged the government to reverse its actions. The AP vice president of corporate communications expressed strong disapproval of the shutdown of their live feed.

Israel’s Foreign Broadcaster Law

Israeli officials cited the country’s foreign broadcaster law as the basis for seizing AP’s equipment. The law allows the government to shut down any broadcast by foreign media that may threaten state security.

AP’s Response

Despite receiving an order earlier, AP had refused to comply with the Israeli government’s demands. Today, their equipment was seized altogether.

Al Jazeera Ban

Doha-based news channel Al Jazeera has been banned from Israel since May 5. The government accused Al Jazeera of jeopardizing national security, leading to the seizure of equipment and a ban on its broadcasts and website.
