Police Intervention

  • Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the university’s request for assistance.
  • Sergeant Karie Davies of the Irvine Police Department confirmed that some individuals were handcuffed during the operation.

Before the police intervention, the protesters had taken over the lecture hall, displaying banners and advocating for various causes related to the Gaza conflict:

  • The protest was labeled as “violent” by the university.
  • Approximately 200 to 300 protesters participated in the demonstration.
  • One banner referred to the hall as ‘Alex Odeh Hall,’ in memory of a Palestinian activist.

University Response

Following the incident, University Chancellor Howard Gillman addressed the situation and ongoing discussions with the protesting students:

  • The university engaged in talks with the protesters to find a non-disruptive alternative site.
  • Gillman emphasized the university’s stance on divestment from Israeli interests.
  • Concerns were raised regarding potential restrictions on academic freedom and civil liberties.
