Russian President Vladimir Putin’s Response
President Vladimir Putin announced the national day of mourning and vowed to apprehend and punish all those responsible for the attack. Flags across Russia were lowered to half-mast to honor the victims of the deadliest attack in the country in the past 20 years.
In his address to the nation, Putin expressed his deep condolences to all those who lost their loved ones, emphasizing that the entire country stands in solidarity with the grieving families.
Responsibility for the Attack
The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, although Putin has refrained from directly linking the militant group to the attackers. He mentioned that the perpetrators were attempting to escape to Ukraine, accusing individuals on the Ukrainian side of facilitating their border crossing. However, Ukraine has denied any involvement in the attack.
Putin attributed the incident to “international terrorism,” amid ongoing accusations and counter-accusations between Moscow and Kyiv.
ISIS Releases Bodycam Footage of the Attack
In a recent development, the ISIS released bodycam footage of the attack, which has been described as extremely graphic by netizens. The footage, lasting 90 seconds, shows individuals with obscured faces and distorted voices armed with assault rifles and knives in the lobby of the Crocus City Hall concert venue in Krasnogorsk, northwest of Moscow.
The attackers are seen firing multiple shots, resulting in casualties within the venue.
