New Weekly Work Hour Limit Set for International Students in Canada

Canada’s New Work Hour Limit for International Students

Canada has implemented a new rule limiting work hours for international students, including Indian students, by allowing a maximum of 24 hours per week of off-campus work starting in September. This change comes as a replacement for the previous temporary rule that permitted students to work more than 20 hours per week off-campus.

Significance of the Rule Change

The decision to introduce this new rule was announced by Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, in a recent press release. The aim is to ensure that students primarily focus on their studies while still having the option to work if necessary.

Impact on Indian Students in Canada

Canada has seen a significant influx of Indian students in recent years, with approximately 319,130 Indian students currently studying in Canadian colleges and universities. This makes India the leading source of international students in Canada.

Academic Performance Concerns

Recent studies in both the US and Canada have shown that students who work excessive hours, particularly over 28 hours per week, tend to experience a decline in academic performance. There is also a higher likelihood of these students dropping out of their programs if they work over 24 hours per week.

Work Permit Requirements

Before international students can start working off-campus in Canada, it is crucial for both the student and the employer to ensure that the student is permitted to work without a work permit. Failure to meet these requirements may result in the student having to leave the country. Additionally, Indian students in Canada must adhere to the conditions outlined in their study permits regarding off-campus work.
