Japanese Town’s Plan to Block View of Mount Fuji Due to Tourist Misbehavior

Japanese Authorities to Install Mesh Net to Block View of Mount Fuji

An official from Fujikawaguchiko town announced that construction of a 2.5 meters tall and 20 meters long mesh net will start next week to address overcrowding issues caused by foreign tourists.

Background

Japan, with a population of around 124,840,000, has a land mass of approximately 146,000 square miles. In Fujikawaguchiko, a popular spot for viewing Mount Fuji, overcrowding due to tourists has become a significant concern.

Reason for Installation

Authorities in Japan are frustrated by the behavior of some tourists who disregard rules, leave litter, and trespass onto private properties for better views. The mesh net is intended to deter overcrowding and protect the area.

Impact of Overtourism

The influx of tourists, driven by social media popularity, has led to challenges in managing overcrowding in tourist spots like Fujikawaguchiko. Similar issues are faced by destinations worldwide, including Venice, Italy.

Venice Introduces Entry Fee to Combat Overtourism

In response to overtourism, Venice has implemented a pilot program charging day-trippers a €5 entry fee to reduce visitor numbers and enhance the experience for residents.

Implementation Details

Signs have been placed at key entry points in Venice to inform visitors about the entry fee. Stewards have been trained to assist visitors in understanding the fee and the process of obtaining a QR code for entry.

Global Efforts Against Overtourism

Various destinations are exploring strategies like entry fees and crowd control to balance tourism and environmental preservation, ensuring a sustainable future for popular tourist spots.
