Safely Removing Unexploded Bomb in Nis Neighborhood
Officials in a southern Serbian city successfully removed an unexploded bomb dating back to the NATO bombing of the country in 1999.
Evacuation of Residents
The 1,000-kilogramme bomb was safely extracted from a construction site in the Nis neighborhood, leading to the evacuation of over a thousand residents.
Safe Transportation and Destruction
Official Luka Causic confirmed that the bomb is being transported to a safe location for destruction. Prior to its removal, 1,300 residents were evacuated from the area for their safety.
Expert Handling
Police, firefighters, and medical teams were present on-site to ensure the safe transportation of the bomb, which contains an explosive charge of 430 kilogrammes.
NATO Bombing Campaign
NATO initiated its bombing campaign against Serbia in 1999 to stop the violent suppression of ethnic Albanian separatists in Kosovo. The campaign lasted for 78 days.
Deadly Incidents
During the campaign, Nis experienced tragic incidents, including a bombing on May 7, 1999, where over a dozen people died due to cluster bombs. Another bombing on May 12 resulted in the deaths of 11 civilians.
