Israel’s Reaction to US Veto on Palestine UN Membership
Israel is set to summon ambassadors from several countries that voted in favor of granting full UN membership to Palestine. The Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas criticized the US veto, calling it “unfair, unethical and unjustified” and stating that it was a “blatant aggression”.
Israel’s Protest Talk with Ambassadors
In response to the US veto, Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs will summon ambassadors from countries that supported upgrading the status of Palestinians in the UN. Spokesperson Oren Marmorstein mentioned that this action is in protest of the countries that voted in favor of the Palestinian upgrade.
Countries Whose Ambassadors Will Be Summoned
- France
- Malta
- Japan
- South Korea
- Slovenia
- Ecuador
The protest is a response to these countries’ support for the Algerian proposal, which aimed to elevate Palestine’s status in the UN but was rejected.
Israel’s Stance on Palestine’s UN Membership
Israel firmly opposes recognizing Palestine as a full UN member state, considering it a “prize for terrorism.” The rejection of the draft resolution by the Security Council aligns with Israel’s position.
The Security Council’s Committee on the Admission of Member States deliberated on the matter earlier this month, but the US vetoed the draft resolution recommending Palestine’s admission as a full member.
Reaction from Palestinian Authorities
President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the US veto as an unjust act that escalates tensions in the region. Palestinian ambassador to the UN, Riyad Mansour, expressed determination despite the setback.
