Texas Senate Bill 4 Lifts Pause
The United States Supreme Court, with a six-three conservative majority, has lifted the pause on the Texas Senate Bill 4 (SB4), a controversial Republican-backed law. This decision allows the state’s law enforcement officials to detain and deport migrants on charges of illegally entering the country from the US-Mexico border.
Immediate Effect Despite Opposition
The lift of the pause on SB4 will immediately take effect, despite three liberal justices on the Supreme Court voting against it. This law also makes illegal entry or re-entry into Texas a state crime punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
Reactions
Mexico’s foreign ministry has issued a strong statement, declaring that it will not accept individuals ordered to leave the country under the state law. In response, the White House has criticized the Texas law, stating that it will “sow chaos and confusion at our southern border.”
