Downing Street Prepares for Potential Rejection of Smoking Ban by Many Conservative MPs

Rishi Sunak’s Smoking Ban Legislation Faces Opposition

The government is anticipating resistance from Conservative MPs regarding Rishi Sunak’s proposed smoking ban. The legislation, known as the Tobacco and Vapes Bill, aims to incrementally raise the legal smoking age each year until it is phased out entirely.

Rishi Sunak’s Initiative

Rishi Sunak introduced the smoking ban proposal at the Conservative party conference, emphasizing its importance for public health and well-being. The Prime Minister has shown strong support for this measure as part of his legacy.

Government’s Defense of the Bill

In defense of the bill, Sunak’s spokesperson highlighted the significant health and economic benefits that would result from its implementation. The Prime Minister’s stance is clear – addressing smoking is crucial for a better future and the overall well-being of the nation.

Political Landscape

While the smoking ban has garnered support from Labour and other opposition parties, some Conservative MPs, particularly those in the libertarian wing, are opposed to the government’s intervention in individual lifestyle choices.

No 10 and the Whips are prepared for potential dissent from Tory backbenchers during the upcoming House of Commons vote. Sunak has allowed a free vote on the issue, indicating that MPs will not face repercussions for voting against the government’s position.

Challenges and Negotiations

Concerns have been raised about the enforceability of the smoking ban, with discussions underway for potential amendments to the bill during the legislative process. Talks are ongoing between dissenting MPs and peers in the House of Lords to address specific concerns and seek exemptions for certain tobacco products.

Former chancellor Lord Ken Clarke has cautioned that enforcing the proposed ban may pose challenges, particularly in verifying individuals’ ages. The effectiveness of the legislation will be closely monitored in the future.

Overall, the smoking ban legislation is set to undergo scrutiny and potential modifications as it progresses through the parliamentary stages.
