Sammie Szmodics aims for Republic of Ireland debut on third attempt

Sammie Szmodics Eager for Republic of Ireland Debut

Sammie Szmodics is determined to finally make his debut for the Republic of Ireland national team after missing out on two previous opportunities. The in-form Blackburn striker has been called up by interim head coach John O’Shea and could potentially make his first senior appearance in an upcoming friendly match against Belgium.

Background

Szmodics, who has been in impressive form this season with 27 goals for his club, including 21 in the Sky Bet Championship, expressed his disappointment at not being selected for previous camps. However, he is now focused on making the most of his current opportunity with the national team.

Excitement and Determination

Speaking at a press conference, Szmodics stated, “I am excited and hopeful to make my debut this weekend. I have been working hard and staying focused on my performance at the club level, and I am eager to seize this chance with both hands.”

International Eligibility

Despite being eligible to represent Hungary through his grandfather, Szmodics has reaffirmed his commitment to playing for Ireland. He dismissed recent comments from Hungary’s manager and emphasized his dedication to the Irish national team.

New Faces in the Squad

Szmodics is not the only potential debutant in the squad, as Lyon defender Jake O’Brien and Middlesbrough midfielder Finn Azaz have also received their first senior call-ups. The upcoming matches against Belgium and Switzerland will provide an opportunity for these players to make their mark.

Ireland’s upcoming fixture against Belgium will be their first since the departure of former coach Stephen Kenny. The team is currently in the process of appointing a new head coach as they aim to improve their rankings and performance on the international stage.
