India’s Support for Rwanda
India has a long history of solidarity with Rwanda, dating back to the early 1990s when it was one of the few countries to raise concerns about the possibility of genocide in the country.
Indian Soldiers’ Sacrifices
During the 1994 genocide, Indian soldiers serving as part of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda (UNAMIR) made ultimate sacrifices in the line of duty.
Relief Efforts
New Delhi provided relief materials worth ₹5 lakh to Rwandese refugees in Tanzania.
Evacuation Efforts
India took swift action to evacuate its nationals from Rwanda during the height of the violence. The Indian High Commission in Kampala, concurrently accredited to Rwanda, facilitated the safe evacuation of all Indian nationals, except for two nuns who chose to remain behind to care for Rwandan orphans under their charge.
Community Relocation
The evacuation efforts led to the Indian community relocating to neighboring countries like Burundi, with the assistance of other friendly nations.
