Grey’s Anatomy fans have experienced mixed reactions after it was announced the medical drama had been renewed for season 21. The Shonda Rhimes series shows no sign of disappearing from our screens despite the departure of its main star Ellen Pompeo last year.

First launched on ABC in 2005, the programme now counts actors including Kate Walsh and Scott Speedman among its cast. It has not been announced who could be returning for season 21 but some fans are hoping it is Grey’s Anatomy’s last as they want some ‘good nostalgia guest stars’.
Fan Reactions
Sharing their exasperation on Reddit, user Fiesty-Donkey complained: ‘Why will they not just release me from this torment? I’ve been hanging around the last five years just because I know the final season will have some good nostalgia guest stars, and we can’t get to that if they never give us a last season. Echoing their sentiment, Mabelisms agreed on the forum: ‘Oh, God, put us all out of our misery.’
Given Grey’s Anatomy already became the longest-running primetime medical drama in the US in 2019, the new season announcement made Reddit user Macademianut joke that they would be watching the ‘never-ending’ show ‘in our retirement’ homes.
Divided Opinions
However, some viewers took umbrage with those moaning about the programme’s continuation. Reddit user Ndita asked: ‘When did this fanbase become so negative? Like just stop watching it? No one is forcing you. S19 was the best season in years and S20 is off to a great start, it’s breathing life back into the show.
On the divided reaction, K095342 remarked simply: ‘I love how the comments vary from “yay I’m so excited” and “release me from this hell please I beg of you.”‘
Controversial Decisions
It is not the first time a Grey’s Anatomy decision has stoked controversy with many fans disappointed over the handling of Ellen’s character Meredith Grey’s exit. Meredith left the hospital to move to Boston with her family for a new job, a move many described as ‘underwhelming.’
‘All I’m saying is, Meredith Grey did not survive a bomb, drowning, a gunman, a plane crash, a burned down house, a dead husband, a dead sister, two dead parents, a bunch of dead friends, for it to end like THAT,’ one person posted on Twitter.
Cast Departures
Other stars to have left the show before Ellen include Hollywood icons Sandra Oh, Katherine Heigl and Patrick Dempsey. Grey’s Anatomy focuses on the lives of surgical interns, residents, and attendings at the Seattle’s Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital as they develop into seasoned doctors while balancing personal and professional relationships.
