7 Teen Extremists Arrested in Connection to Sydney Church Stabbing

Overview

Sydney police arrested seven teenagers, aged 15 to 17, in raids connected to extremist ideology after a bishop was stabbed. The arrests were made to prevent potential harm to the community.

Raids and Arrests

In a series of raids conducted across Sydney, Australian police apprehended the teenagers suspected of following a violent extremist ideology. The suspects are believed to be involved in the stabbing of a bishop in a Sydney church earlier this month.

Joint Counter-Terrorism Team

The Joint Counter-Terrorism Team, comprising federal and state police, the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, and the New South Wales Crime Commission, was involved in questioning five other teenagers late Wednesday.

Police Operation

Over 400 police officers executed 13 search warrants in southwest Sydney due to the perceived threat posed by the suspects. Deputy Commissioner David Hudson stated that the individuals adhered to a religiously motivated, violent extremist ideology.

Public Safety Concerns

Deputy Commissioner Krissy Barrett of the Australian Federal Police mentioned that while there was no evidence of specific targets or timing for a violent act, the suspects were considered a significant risk to public safety.

Recent Incidents

The arrests followed a recent knife attack at a Sydney church that resulted in terrorism charges against a 16-year-old. The incident involved the stabbing of Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel and Reverend Isaac Royel at Christ the Good Shepherd Church.

Security Measures

ASIO Director-General Mike Burgess emphasized the importance of security intelligence in dealing with immediate threats to life or evolving situations.
