$22 Million Gold Heist: Airport Workers Among Arrested Suspects

Investigation into Multi-Million Dollar Gold Heist at Toronto Pearson Airport

Overview

Authorities have arrested six individuals in connection to a multi-million dollar gold heist that took place at Toronto Pearson International Airport. The theft, which occurred on April 17, 2023, involved over $22 million in gold bars and foreign currency that vanished from a secure storage facility. Police suspect the involvement of former Air Canada employees in the heist, with warrants issued for three other suspects who are still at large.

Details of the Heist

  • At least two former Air Canada employees allegedly assisted in the theft, according to police.
  • The stolen valuables had arrived on an Air Canada flight from Zurich, Switzerland.
  • The theft is believed to have involved fraudulent paperwork.

Arrests and Recoveries

All nine individuals involved in the heist face a total of over 19 charges. While six have been arrested, warrants have been issued for the remaining three suspects. A search warrant executed in Ontario led to the recovery of five gold bangles valued at approximately $90,000.

Law Enforcement Efforts

Authorities commend the diligent efforts of law enforcement in investigating the heist. Peter Fitzpatrick, a spokesperson for Air Canada, expressed gratitude for the thorough investigation. Detective Sgt. Mike Mavity of Peel Regional Police described the incident as an ‘inside job’ that required individuals within Air Canada to facilitate the theft.

Connection to Pennsylvania Incident

In September 2023, Pennsylvania authorities linked a Canadian individual, who was illegally in the US, to the stolen cargo container from the Toronto gold heist. Firearms were found in a rental car associated with the individual, preventing potential violence crimes.
